After a fantastic, efficient installation at Thermopyles, Elpis founders Sam and Alex, alongside Alex's father Vassilis, crowded into a small van to drive an additional 3 hours north to Thessaloniki, excited to visit the Softex camp.
After two installations as a full team we decided we had enough training and split up for two ambitious journeys. Six of us piled in the old, rickety rental van to drive all the way to the west coast and install a solar hub in Kyllini for the first time, while Alexandros and Erika flew to the island of Lesvos, close to Turkey, to provide two more charging stations in the Kara Tepe camp.
Our second stop of the trip was Skaramangas: the largest refugee camp in Greece, located right on the coast of Athens. If you’re like us, you might think that location would make it easy to find. After a stop at the wrong camp, consulting with pedestrians, and countless U-turns, we joined a caravan of large busses that were pulling into a massive abandoned shipyard
Today we had an incredible experience installing our first unit of the week at Ritsona refugee camp.
We had visited this camp before, last June, and were now coming to check-up on our old unit and install our new updated pilot version. We had never imagined the camp would transform so much in so little time.
It's hard to believe it's already February. We have exciting news: we're flying to Greece in just two weeks! We're so excited to enter this new phase of implementation. We'll be piloting our new Raspberry Pi in select camps and installing more Solar Hubs - now with an improved design to protect phones from rain.
On February 20th at Dynamic Earth, this conference will be the embodiment of a change in the Scottish sustainability movement, with support from the RSA Scotland and the 2050 Youth Climate Group.
It's almost the end of 2016...and what a year it has been! We wanted to take a moment to reflect on what this year has meant for Elpis, and what we have to look forward to in 2017.
